Electric transport is one of our fields. It is not the house. What holds the fields together is not a subject, it is an order of work: read the record, then measure, then build, and write down what you found while you did.

Why a house and not a workshop

A workshop knows one craft. A house keeps a method and lets the subject change. The patent record does not care whether the thing is a motor, a garment or a growing rig. Someone tried it, wrote down what happened, and filed the paper. That paper reads the same whichever field it came from.

That is the whole argument for working across fields rather than in one. A cooling problem solved in a battery pack has been solved before in a food line. A wear problem in a textile is a wear problem in a bearing. The transfer is real, and it is readable.

It also decides who we can help. A field we have never read in is a field where we would be guessing, and guessing is what a client can do without paying anyone.

Artificial intelligence

A model is a claim, and a claim needs evidence

We build models that do a job, and we write down what they were trained on, what they were tested against and what they cannot do. A model that nobody can question is not a tool, it is a rumour with a confidence score.

Most of the useful work is not the model. It is the pipeline that feeds it and the check that catches it when it is wrong. Both are ordinary engineering, and both are where projects actually fail.

The hard part is the person standing next to it

Moving a tool through space is a solved problem with good suppliers. Doing it beside a person, at a speed that is worth the money, under a safety standard that governs exactly that arrangement, is not.

Materials and clothing

A garment is a structure that has to be comfortable

Textiles are engineering material with an unusual requirement: they have to be pleasant against skin while doing structural work. Fibre, weave and finish decide strength, wear, breathability and what the thing leaves behind when it is thrown away.

The same test rig that pulls a metal bar apart pulls a fabric apart, and it answers the same question. We work on both sides of that bench and treat clothing as a material problem, because that is what it is.

Food and growing

Yield is easy to raise and hard to raise honestly

A growing rig is a thermal problem, a water problem, a light problem and a control problem in one box. Every one of them is measurable, and every one of them has been solved before in a field that had nothing to do with plants.

What we will not do is help a number look better than the thing it describes. If the yield went up because the input went up, that is arithmetic and not innovation, and we will say so.

Connected living

A home that measures you owes you an answer

Comfort and consumption are the two things a connected home is asked to improve. Both are straightforward to measure and straightforward to fake, so the measurement has to be built to be checked by the person living there.

The third thing, which is usually left out of the brochure, is who else gets to see it. We treat that as a design requirement and not as a paragraph in a policy nobody opens.

The measurement also has to survive the house being sold, the router being replaced and the service being discontinued. A home that stops working when a company does was never a product, it was a subscription with a plug.

Health and measurement

We build the instrument, not the promise

Longer and better lived years is the most interesting engineering question of the century, and the one most often answered with a slogan. We work on the instruments: what can be measured, how repeatably, against which baseline, and what the reading cannot tell you.

We are not a clinic and we give no medical advice. What we do is the hardware, the software and the technical file around a device, and we name the notified body in the plan. A claim about a human body belongs to a regulator, and we design so that it can be put to one.

The patent record, the standards and the literature, before a budget is committed. It is the cheapest week in the project.
